Algeria set to unveil its first electric car in 2026

From the newsletter

Algeria is planning to launch its first locally-made electric car in March 2026. The project, launched in April 2023, is being done by a consortium of the Algerian Centre for Research in Industrial Technologies (CRTI) and industrial partners. Originally slated for completion in 2025, the electric car’s launch was postponed due to the project’s technical complexity.

  • Algeria joins other African countries that are building a government-backed electric car. Others include Uganda, Botswana, and Egypt. In countries like Kenya, South Africa and Morocco, ventures to make electric cars are being driven by the private sector.

  • The electric car that will be made will be a quadricycle, a street-legal, light-duty vehicle that bridges the gap between a large motorbike and a full-sized car. They are cheap and easy to maintain, making them compete more favourably with imported electric cars.
