Electric air taxis take off for the first time in Africa

Rwanda has become the first country in Africa to showcase a public flight of a self-driving electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The electric air taxi, with a capacity of two passengers, was made by EHang Holdings, a Chinese tech company. The craft took to the skies during the Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. |
New to Africa, eVTOLs are future alternatives to helicopters. They may offer efficient urban air mobility, reduce traffic congestion and improve access to remote areas for services like emergency response and package delivery.
Rwanda joins Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria and Kenya as the major African countries showing interest in developing or acquiring eVTOLs for tourism and cargo transport.

Electric bicycle company eBee Africa is planning to expand into Tanzania and Ethiopia to grow sales. In an interview with Mobility Rising, eBee Africa Managing Director Maarten Fonteijn says the company has already done market research in the two countries as it mulls its next moves. eBee, founded in 2021 by a group of Dutch investors, currently operates in Kenya and Uganda. |
eBee pioneered electric bicycles in Kenya four years ago before expanding to Uganda. It says that while its immediate focus will continue to be on the two countries, it has begun preliminary work for further expansion into new markets.
“We have already visited Ethiopia and Tanzania and even done market research and other stuff because for a lot of reasons, there is a lot of potential in those two markets as well,” said Mr Fonteijn.

The price of BYD Atto 3 in Kenya dropped by 11.8% in September from August, according to an analysis of electric car prices carried out by Mobility Rising. The price of BYD Dolphin fell by 11.6%, and the BYD Seal by almost 2%. Similarly, the price of the Neta V declined by 1.5%. Kenya recorded the highest volatility in prices compared to South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria. |
Mobility Rising monitors monthly price changes for over 24 electric vehicles across Africa — Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt are included in the analysis as leading markets for EV activity.
BYD has embarked on an aggressive price cutting drive globally to grow sales. In Egypt, however, EV prices continue to rise despite increased competition, reflecting a particular market ecosystems.
