Ethiopia has launched its first locally-made electric vehicle charger, joining the list of African countries that make EV chargers. The chargers were made by the National Technical and Vocational Training Institute (NTVI), which has also produced EV body parts and industrial electric motors capable of powering utility vehicles and various equipment.
- Its ban on importation of fuel passenger vehicles and trucks has created a huge demand for EVs. It is racing to localise manufacturing within its electric mobility value chain to reduce its reliance on imports and to create jobs.
- Ethiopia joins countries like Algeria, South Africa and Kenya that have EV charger production enterprises. Making EV chargers is much cheaper and less complex than manufacturing full EVs.
