Kiira Motors launches new plant that can produce 5,000 EVs

From the newsletter
Ugandan electric vehicle company Kiira Motors has opened a new factory in the industrial city of Jinja. The EV factory has a capacity to produce 5,000 vehicles annually, making up to 11 electric buses per day. It was developed in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation. A state-owned company, Kiira was handed a seed capital of $40 million in 2018.
Uganda’s ambition to become an EV hub depends on the Kiira Motors plant reaching its full production capacity. If achieved, it will strengthen Africa’s EV bus supply chain and open opportunities for exports.
The new facility also places Uganda alongside Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers, who assemble electric buses for BasiGo. This marks a significant step in expanding East Africa’s role in the e-mobility sector.
