Locally-made electric motorcycles fill Ugandan roads

The number of electric motorcycles produced in Uganda grew by 139% to 2,795 units in 2024, according to a new report by the state-run Science, Technology and Innovation secretariat. Since local assembly of electric motorcycles began in the country in 2019, more than 4,250 units have been produced. The leading assemblers are Gogo Electric, Zembo, Spiro and Redvers.   

  • Spiro is planning to build an assembly plant with a capacity of 50,000 units per year in Uganda, while Zembo and Gogo Electric have been raising capital to increase their production capabilities. 

  • Besides electric motorcycles, Uganda also recorded a major increase across all EV categories, including bicycles, passenger cars and buses in 2024. This makes it one of the fastest growing EV markets in the region.

The labour market in the electric mobility sector grew by 8.7% in the past month, the Mobility Rising Staff Index shows. It measures the change in the number of jobs available, number of companies advertising jobs, and the most recent shift in our sector salary survey. It also tracks the change in the number of staff and attrition rate at the top ten companies.     

  • The index rose from 260 in May to 282.9 in June. The biggest driver was a significant increase in the number of jobs available in the sector, which grew by 36% to 102 from 75 in May. 

  • Our analysis shows that the number of senior staff at the leading ten electric mobility companies increased to 3,007 in June, an increase of 1.86% from May.

Mobility asset financiers dominate this week’s hiring activity, accounting for 30% of the 23 new job postings tracked by Mobility Rising. Financing firms such as M-Kopa, Mogo, and Watu Africa contributed seven of these roles, with M-Kopa leading the vacancies with five new openings. The positions are concentrated in Kenya and Uganda.

  • East Africa leads with 15 listings, followed by West Africa with four, while southern and North Africa posted three and one respectively. M-Kopa, BasiGo, and Dodai are this week’s top recruiters.

  • There is a growing demand for IT roles in e-mobility, especially in data science and software development. As EV fleets expand, companies like BasiGo and Shift EV are hiring Lead Data Scientists and Control System Leads to support vehicle tracking, telematics, and intelligent energy management systems.
