Nigeria unveils 240 electric tricycles for students

From the newsletter

The Nigerian government has handed over 240 solar-powered electric tricycles to 12 public universities to cut student transport costs. Funded through TETFund, each university received 20 tricycles and a solar charging station. Student unions will operate the tricycles at reduced fares to ensure affordability while generating funds for maintenance and expansion.

  • There are millions of students in Nigeria who commute to campus daily. The state-backed electric tricycles programme opens a major opportunity for EV firms to supply the vehicles, which will cut costs by up to 70%.

  • Governments in Africa are playing a critical role in the early adoption of EVs, mainly through EV mandates, tax breaks and initial funding for projects. Such pilot projects help derisk the sector for private investors.
