Opinion: Why fuel stations hold the key for EV adoption in Ghana

The limited number of swapping stations in Ghana is a major drawback for electric vehicles in the country. But ironically, fuel stations, which EVs threaten to hastily drive out of business, hold the key to widespread EV adoption, argues Mike Darkoh, the founder and CEO of Shipeazi Logistics. “They already have the locations, the land, and the network,” he says.

  • Mr Darkoh is a strategic growth consultant with nearly five years of experience building startups, having successfully launched four to date. Three of these ventures are in the transport sector.

  • He also raises questions about the viability of EVs as the cost of swapping is nearly on par with the cost of petrol. However, expanding the network of swapping hubs can significantly reduce these costs while protecting jobs, he opines.
