Electric motorcycle company Roam has unveiled Kenya’s first public fast charging station for light electric vehicles like bicycles, motorcycles, scooters and tricycles. The Roam Point introduces a self-service charging system with a range of 10-20 km in under five minutes. Roam said it marks the start of a nationwide rollout of high-speed charging infrastructure.
The majority of electric motorcycles in Africa rely on swapping stations which offer quick battery exchanges. Fast charging offers an alternative, especially for motorcycle taxi riders who own their bikes and battery.
Non-interoperability has been a key issue in the EV sector, limiting users to specific charging and swapping stations. The Roam Points seek to solve that as they are equipped with Type 6 connectors and open-charge standards, working with all light EVs built to the same specifications.
