This is how you market EVs in rural Africa

One of the largest convoys of EVs in Africa will kick off a 1,600 km road trip from Kenya’s capital Nairobi to Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Sunday. The six-day trip brings together electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy-duty electric trucks in one convoy, documenting the realities of cross-border travel with EVs ahead of the Africa E-Mobility Week 2025 in Addis.
The trip will test the practicality of using EVs for long distance trips in Africa, where charging stations are few and far between. It will also show off the technology to rural populations at stops in towns along the way.
This still falls far short of Africa’s longest EV trip. The feat was achieved by Citroën, a French automaker. In February, four electric, solar-fitted Citroën Ami cars concluded a historic four-month journey from Morocco to South Africa, covering 16,000 km.
