Here is why insurers are starting to cover EVs

King Price Insurance has become the first insurer in a major African country to cover a commercial fleet of EVs. It started to give preferential coverage to Everlectric, an electric fleet company in South Africa. The firm provides commercial EVs as a service to businesses, focusing on the logistics and distribution sectors. It runs a total of 200 vehicles.  

  • Commercial fleet companies have been struggling to convince insurers to drop high premiums based on expensive EV components like batteries. 

  • Increased EV adoption in the past year has enabled insurers to gather more data and assess risks in more detail.

Algeria is planning to launch its first locally-made electric car in March 2026. The project, launched in April 2023, is being carried out by the Algerian Centre for Research in Industrial Technologies (CRTI) and several industrial partners. Originally slated for completion in 2025, the electric car’s launch was postponed due to the project’s technical complexity. 

  • Algeria joins Uganda, Botswana and Egypt in building a government-backed electric car. Meanwhile in Kenya, South Africa and Morocco the sector is mainly driven by the private sector.   

  • Algeria’s car is a quadricycle, a street-legal, light-duty vehicle that bridges the gap between a large motorbike and a full-sized car. They are cheap and easy to maintain, making them competitive with imported EVs.

Mobility Rising has spotted seven new e-mobility roles across Africa, concentrated in East and West Africa. East Africa leads with six openings. No new listings were recorded in North and southern Africa. Notably, Dodai posted the most roles while E-Safiri and Solar Taxi reappear on our job board, signalling a fresh push for new talent.
